dam-funk - Toeachizown Vol. 1: Latrik
Time to take it back to old skool LA with the first installment of the 'Toeachizown' releases from Dam Funk and Stones Throw. This cat has been getting the west coast boogie heads almost bustin' a sweat with his regular 'Funkmosphere' events cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in early 80's styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro Funk. Think early Prince, Slave or Prelude records for the vibe. Dam has serious boogie credentials too, as he's partly responsible for the development of 90's G-funk as a session musician playing keys for Nate Dogg and Warren G among others, giving some sense of the calibre you're dealing with here. We'll warn you that if you're not open to a heavy dose of synthual seduction, avert your eyes and ears now. The title track dims the lights for an intro into his galactic groove, greasing up an arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines to channel steamy space funk. 'Mirrors' backs this up with a expert exersize in funk programming, elliciting snapping patterns from his trusty Linn drum machine before 'On & On' glides out on a magic carpet of burgundy silk synthlines with cyber sleazing talkbox, Roger Troutman styles. The kinked funk of 'LAtrifying' is among the best you'll find here, a pure dancefloor killer crafted with the innate understanding of someone that spent a lot of time behind the decks or on the dancefloor, controlling the drum machine like a true player. 'Let's Take Off, Far Away' is among the sickest jams, spilling astral synthlines all over a bass rich boogie groove in extended funk mode, while 'Tunnels' falls headlong into a mindblowing electrofunk joint. Imagine Juan Atkins trippin' out in LA circa 1984 and you're half way there. However, if you're only going to try one track here make sure it's 'Searchin' For Funk's Future', besides getting your dollars worth at just over 9 mins, it's also a stupendously lush composition featuring awesome Prince style vox washed in sublime synthlines and minimally effective machine patterns to take help you on your quest. We're utterly smitten with this and urge you to check it out ASAP - KILLER!!!!!!
