gazelle twin - Mammal EP
Highly impressive electronic goth pop including remixes by Clint Mansell, Kuedo, Alixander III, and Renaissance Man. Working somewhere between the shadows of Fever Ray, Holy Other, and Soap & Skin, Elizabeth Walling has undeniably compelling presence as Gazelle Twin. In possession of a stunning vocal power and unafraid to use electronic treatments to affective ends, she sweeps from the soaring clarity of 'I Turn My Arm' to a more hushed, folksy contrast of 'This Is My Hand' and a mesmerizing, brooding cover of Colin Newman and Wire's 'Heartbeat'. Remixing 'This Is My Hand', Clint Mansell morphs and the vocal surface with a moire of FX emulating a sort of finger-on-LCD display effect, while ratcheting the tension of the strings and augmenting the rhythm with icy, metronomic ticks. And with 'I Turn My Arm' we find a stunning transformation from Kuedo, a spiralling, beatless vortex of synth arpeggios and polychromatic harmonies, whereas Renaissance Man deigns for a lurching dubstep drama and Alixander III gives a darkly glossy house overhaul.
