seavault - The Mercy Seat
Seavault is a brand new collaborative project between Isan's Anthony Ryan and Simon Scott (aka Televise) and between them the two have come up with the perfect nu-gazer formula. Crushed beats, thick psychedelic textures and that breathy pop sentiment straight out of the MBV/Slowdive rulebook makes this one of the finest representations of the genre we've loved for a long while - but then it's hardly surprising given Scott's pedigree playing with Slowdive (Just for a Day and Souvlaki era!) and Chapterhouse. So this is hardly nu-gaze at all and the tantalising result we get from throwing one of electronica's best known figures into the mix is as stunning as it really should be. Both these tracks, strangely enough, are covers, firstly of Ultra Vivid Scene's 'Mercy Seat' and secondly 'I Could Be Happy' by Altered Images. Both are taken into Seavault's dense shimmer, and while there's an 80s charm this is very much music in Morr Music's patented idiom. Beautiful music, and another quality signing for the Morr label.
