beneath - Illusions EP
After a brace of instant-classic white label drops on his own No Symbols imprint, Beneath graduates to Keysound with an EP of ice-cold post-UKF murderers. Rhythmically, 'Prangin''s broken techno flex feels entirely of the moment, but you can detect something of the dark rollage of early Krust productions in there too; it's all arranged with a simplicity designed to come at you hard even over the weakest pirate signal, a shot of pure poison straight to soundboy head. 'Blonde' and 'Tribulations' are heavier on the snake-hipped soca syncopations, but nonetheless still infused with a sense of the deepest dread, while 'Wonz' is quality avant-garage, atonal piano and synth strains jostling over a nicely greased, El-B-style riddim, and 'Illusions''s jagged snares, woodblock accents and desolate atmospherics put us in mind of Loefah's earliest and best productions.
