roll the dice meets pole - In Dubs
*Metallic silver vinyl* Swedish dreamers Roll The Dice have handed over three tracks from their 2011 LP 'In Dust' to Deutsche dub technician Stefan Betke for him to work his magic; the resulting EP is called 'In Dubs' (how they resisted calling it Pole The Dice we'll never know). 'Calling Dub Workers' opens the set and here Pole's treatments are most subtle; the track sounds like Roll The Dice to the core, and it's only some judiciously applied crackle and echo FX that obviously suggest foreign intervention. Needless to say, though, Betke's lightness of touch shouldn't be confused with smallness of effect: his delicate tweaking of this material gives it a newfound grandeur, and the finished article provokes comparisons to the sublime autumnal sketches of Harmonia '76. 'Echo Hands' is more demonstratively Pole-ish, with its minimalist sound design enfolding enormous sub-bass heft, and 'The Skull Is Built Into The Version' brings the EP to a triumphant close, with a spiky avant-steppers' rhythm reminiscent of SND's Tenderlove material.
