three legged race - Persuasive Barrier
Don't be fooled by the crack-in-the-cosmic-egg cover art, Three Legged Race's Persuasive Barrier is a hard record to pin down stylistically, and we'd even go so far as to say it's one of the most compelling artifacts that Spectrum Spools have ever presented us with. A solo endeavour of Hair Police founder Robert Beatty, it covers an extraordinary amount of ground without losing its focus: from the Schnitzler-esque spurt of 'Magnetic Bride', to the jerry-built space-pop of the title track, which sounds like Storm Bugs or Flaming Tunes trying to make radio contact from the other side of the galaxy. 'Butter Coloured Hallway' is dark, droning industrial drift in the vein of Nocturnal Emissions or, more recently, Carlos Giffoni's Severance, while 'Locked Eyes' could be from an early Advisory Circle or Belbury Poly LP, equal parts twee and menace. 'Budgeting Air', 'Permethrin I' and 'Permethrin iI' are more freeform, noise-inflected synth experiments, the latter making wholly unexpected use of whumping, El-B-style sub-bass (seriously). Deeply indebted to the DIY/outsider electronics aesthetic of the early 80s, Persuasive Barrier could easily be passed off as a genuine find from that era; the fact that such eccentric and original music is being made now, in 2012, is cause for much celebration. An absolutely quality side.
