redshape - Square
One of European house and techno's most enduring enigmas follows up his 'Dance Paradox' LP on Delsin with the sci-fi techno vision 'Square' for Germany's Running Back label. Compared with its predecessor, this is a more expansive, diffuse and experimental affair, a proper album experience in the classic sense of the term, structured with a narrative ebb and flow taking us from signature techno-house hybrids to ambient interludes and even a pair of half-step decelerations, one featuring Hyperdub's Spaceape. And compared with what else is out there, 'Square' represents something unspoken, and sadly undervalued in modern techno; a dark romance with his machines, a loner spirit that longs for attentions, yet which can only truly function alone. If we're picking dancefloor highlights, we'd have to draw for the hypnotic Roland cadence of 'It's In Rain'; the M. Pittman-like wend of 'Starsoup'; the grinding dancefloor war march of 'Paper'; or the bulky swing of 'Enter The Volt'. But the most interesting moments are those we're not used to; on the mystic downbeat resolutions of 'Moods & Mice', on the leaden lurch of 'Until We Burn' with Space Ape or in the richly cinematic qualities of 'Landing' and the Vangelis-esque 'Departing'.
