iibiis rooge - Hespherides
*Following that KILLER debut back in 2010, this amazing project featuring members of Astral Social Club and High Wolf return for another dose of heavy, squashed and bass-heavy Techno malfunctions* Neil Campbell (Astral Social Club, Vibracathedral Orchestra) reunites with High Wolf for a 2nd LP of amazing spiralling cosmic loop orchestration and Techno f*ck-ups. Lest we forget, their first, eponymous vinyl was a highlight of 2010's psych scenery, sounding like little else before or since. For Weird Forest, their 'Hespherides' adopts a more gradual, unfolding approach than its predecessor's motorik onslaught, preferring to wade through a molasses whorl of densely layered synth drift, noise modulations and submerged, aquatic polyrhythms. It's difficult to tell who's doing what, exactly, on the A-side, so it's best taken as a well balanced melding of their respective aesthetics slowed down to an amorphous, transportive blur. The B-side is also given to exploring slower, hypnagogic pace. Knackered loops unfurl their quirks and infidelities until a rich harmonic fug emerges, one charged with a slow effervescent energy which soon eats its rhythm anchor to pulse and reel into oceanic guitar and synth noise before regaining its murky 4/4 moorings some 15 minutes/light years later. So good.
