shed - The Praetorian / RQ-170
Ridiculously badass return for Rene Pawlowitz under his Shed guise, with a new single heralding his eagerly awaited third album. ‘The Praetorian’ is a commanding, tightly controlled but investigative track that speaks the language of dubstep, but resists clear categorisation as such - occupying instead a more rarified post-techno clime where the clipped drums and sub-bass heft serve primarily to structure the gorgeously circling melodies that creep in up top. On the flip, ‘RQ-170’ is similarly original, and similarly revelatory – it begins like a scuttling, bass-heavy T++ jam, but the introduction of buzzing stripes of industrial noise and a maxed-out, zombie-paced breakbeat nudge it more into Scorn or Techno Animal territory, before stately synth chords bleach the scene like sun dawning on the gnarliest of disused factory raves – if Autechre had made Chiastic Slide today, it might sound something like this. Masterfully produced, absolutely ESSENTIAL wares from Berlin’s deadliest operator.
