philippe petit - Henry: The Iron Man
*Screen-printed wrap-around jacket* Well warranted re-release of Philippe Petit's re-imagined soundtrack to the David Lynch masterpiece, 'Eraserhead'. Petit was apparently inspired to create what would be his debut solo album by a dream in which legendary director Shinya Tsukamoto was working on a blurred remake of 'Eraserhead', and that he was to soundtrack "the grotesque mutation of Henry into an "Iron Man"." Executed with the kind of imagination you'd expect from an artist who has worked with Cosey Fanni Tutti, Lydia Lunch and Cindytalk, and inspired by some of the bleakest, darkly surreal imagery on celluloid, his score is a choking miasma of dense, visceral drones, noise and texture, exploiting the inherent grain and physical virtues of vinyl with a deft tactility to shape foreboding passages of abstract, avant-garde composition. Intricate digital processes meet analog ephemera in a nightmarish state, smartly reflecting the film's black and white aesthetic with a grey scaled palette of sonics while ruff-cut, hands-on edits mirror dislocating jump-cuts and stop-motion effects. Much like the film, it's an intense, often head-wrenching experience.
