various / robot elephant - SID Chip Sounds: The Music Of The Commodore 64
A must for gentlemen of a certain age, SID Chip Sounds is a whole album of original soundtrack material taken from games for that long-lost, much-loved, outrageously bloody unreliable home games "console", the Commodore 64. To anyone born after 1984, the idea that kids used to play games off cassettes, let alone enjoy them, must be laughable, but those of you old enough to have been there in the dark ages are probably already growing misty-eyed at the recollection. To listen to SID Chip Sounds is to be transported back to your childhood bedroom, staring at a crudely animated on-screen blob, jabbing at your space-bar, ignoring your mum calling you for tea. Gauntlet, Katakis, Last Ninja, Commando, Wizball, Arkanoid - these are just some of the games that Robot Elephant have sourced tunes from. Working within the limited confines of available technology, composers like Martin Galway, Ben Dalgish and Rob Hubbard crafter musical mini-masterpieces that were often more infectious and evocative than the games themselves. We've been caning this album, and trust us, they still sound great; it's probably safe to say that Legowelt has already ordered his copy. Available on CD, digital and double vinyl, this is the ultimate act of ersatz techno archaelogy! Load!
