eyvind kang - Visible Breath
Ghostly chamber music and occult minimalism from Eyvind Kang, new on Stephen O'Malley's Ideologic Organ imprint. Kang is probably best known for his contributions to Sunn O)))'s Monoliths & Dimensions; Visible Breath captures two pieces performed by Kang's 10-piece ensemble in Seattle in 2008, and a third piece, 'Thick Tarragon', recorded in Summer 2011 with pedal steel and cello. The delicate but unsettling 'Visible Breath' is dominated by the droning, otherworldly brass of Stewart Dempster (trombone), Julian Priester (trombone) and Cuong Vu (trumpet), while 'Monadology' feels like it could be lifted from the soundtrack of a 60s outsider thriller, with Taina Karr's oboe, Timb Harris's violin and Eyvind Kang's viola - underlined by the wordless vocalisations of Jessika Kenney - iterating its insistent, suspenseful melody. 'Thick Tarragon' is a more spacious tone poem with medievalist undertones, its empty spaces occupied by restless spirits that may or may not be malevolent.
