bill vanloo - Tones (for Sarah)
The latest artist to join our 7" club is Detroit's Bill Vanloo. Having been involved with Carl Craig and the Planet E crew for some time now, Bill has been quietly constructing soothing tones and electronic delicacies in his Ypsilanti studio for a couple of years now. These two tracks are the first fruit of his audio journey (well, apart from a track on Planet E's recent DEMF compilation) and set a new precedent in the City Centre Offices catalogue of sounds. 'Tones (For Sarah)' sprawls itself across the A-side with a harmony of chords and chimes that start off with a slightly fractured, processed ambience that manages to evoke all things crisp and bright with heartwarming aplomb....a love lullaby that could only possibly be accompanied by pinkish red and orange sunlight. The rhythm does, eventually, come in, but only in the form of skittering hi-hats, like the beginning of an epic ascent to the stars....Elements of Herrmann and Kleine's playfullness can be heard, hints of Isan's velvet analog quilts also come to mind...but this is very much Bill Vanloo - doesn't sound too much like Detroit, doesn't really sound like Berlin either....the sound is that of restrained ideas and the fluffy comfort of knowing once again that simplicity can be so revealing...and so sublime. 'Harmonic Study 1.3' on the flip is a deconstruction of chord and tone - an assemblage of carefully pieced-together machine voices that creates rhythmical accents that may or may not be imaginary. Gorgeous.
