el kid - Hypnosis EP
London's Left_Blank label goes from strength to strength with a deeply impressive single by El Kid, backed by a duttier rerub from recent Hyperdub signing, Walton. Already hailed as one of Bristol's brightest new talents, Sam Kidel is evidently a restless talent, whether making electro-acoustic astro-hop with Vessel, drone-pop under his own name or Basswise Electronic grooves for Immerse. His title track is essentially a composite of all those elements, anchoring rich string drones and intricately detailed synthesis best associated with Ben Frost with the kind of fluid, stepping Bass syncopation of Sully or Zomby. Honestly, it's outstanding stuff. On a more mellow tip, ''Mud' forges a coolly futurist form of House/Electronica, diffusing warm Beatdown rhythms and chords with scuttling dynamics, while 'Kachinja' works a more spooked sort of radiophonic House groove with acres of ethereal space balanced against plush, sensual subs. The icing on the cake is Walton's remix of the title track, augmenting its inherent kink with ruder, roadwise flex primed for connoisseurs of UK underground Bass.
