colin stetson - Those Who Didn't Run
Avant-saxophonist (read : not jazz) Colin Stetson is bound to crop up on plenty of end of year charts this year with his mind-melting 'New History Warfare Vol. 2 : Judges' LP, but just to tease us he's got this little stop-gap so we don't forget about it. 'Those Who Didn't Run' is a lengthy EP with two typically transcendent ten-minute pieces, and comes as a perfect addendum to 'Judges'. Those of you who missed the LP might find 'Those Who Didn't Run' an apt taster to his sound; he's a saxophonist but not really like any you'd expect to come across. While the rest of the sax world seem to get caught up attempting to sound like 'Love Supreme' Coltrane, Stetson has pioneered a unique technique, and I can honestly say he sounds like nobody else around right now. There are likely to be comparisons to Steve Reich with the looping runs on 'The End Of Your Suffering', but the sound is so unusual and haunting it's hard to give an appropriate reference point. The best thing to do is to grab this record, sit down and give you ears and brain a treat - you won't be disappointed.
