the field - Looping State Of Mind
Master of blissed-out repetition, Axel Willner aka The Field arrives at 'Looping State Of Mind', his third album following a pair of universally acclaimed LPs. So, by now he should need scant introduction to lovers of lush-minded Techno and electronic-pop as he's practically defined the sound in recent years, so we'll crack on. There's no huge surprises in his latest effort, but subtle vocal samples and a richer palette of processed acoustic instrumentation add a discernibly evolving depth. At the top 'Is This Power' slips into disco-hypnosis with a supple B-line and mouth-watering layers of drone equally adept for pillow divers and dancers, while 'It's Up There' points out a more graceful Techno throbber with arcing pads and 'Burned Out' eases into lilting Afro-tropical cruise mode. And in the fine tradition of Tranced-out German music from Kosmische through Basic Channel and the Kompakt lot, he's expertly equipped to go on the long haul, especially with the 10 minute+ dance therapy of 'Arpeggiated Love' and the downslow, triplet swinging title track - a crucial investment for any beatdown disco loafers. But, the best is saved for the end with 'Then It's White' and 'Sweet Slow Baby', making a respectful nod to the emotive pop of the Tri Angle lot with quasi-speed beat trickery and pitched vox.
