various - Bridges (Double Picture Disc)
**Hand-numbered edition of 250 double picture discs housed in diecut gatefold sleeve in poly bag** If there was an award for best looking record of the year, this would be coolly posing at the top of the list. The Bridges project was curated by Rutger Zuydervelt (Machinefabriek) and Gerco Hiddink, who paired four groups of improv players - Mats Gustafsson with Nate Wooley, Steven Hess with Erik Carlsson, Jon Mueller with Burkhard Beins, and Jim Denley with Espen Reinertsen - to react to field recordings made at four bridges between Sinderen and Nijmegen in the Netherlands. The musicians didn't play together, instead providing separate reactions to the source material which was then mixed with the original recordings by Zuydervelt and mastered by the esteemed Giuseppe Ielasi for optimal clarity. The results are vivid, dynamic documents of the life of, erm, four Dutch bridges, but as you can probably gauge from the names involved, they're really quite special, and when coupled with the painstakingly edited zoetropic images on the picture disc, they've transformed something generally regarded as static and functionally commonplace, into an immersive, intriguing audio-visual environment to be enjoyed in your own home. And we didn't even mention that one side is called 'Bergerslagbook', oh! oops…
