ifan dafydd - No Good / Miranda
Superb debut from a young producer named Ifan Dafydd, whose sound bears no small resemblance to a certain James Blake. Apparently there's been some debate as to whether this actually is James Blake, the likeness is so uncanny, but it's actually not, and the two producers are quite aware of each other. Anyway, the A-side puts to use a timely sample of a late female British jazz singer, harmonised and pitched almost beyond recognition over fractured 2-step rhythms to sublime effect. The flip uses another poignant R&B sample diffused into sparse and tricksy drum programming for a proper modern soul look. Already tipped by Gilles Peterson and Jamie xx, this is a bit of a winner.
