philipp quehenberger - Uffuff
Gloriously unexpected 12" of lithe techno and dirgey electronic pop from the Editions Mego camp, featuring one original by, and three remixes of, German artist Philippe Quehenberger. 'Uffuff' is a mid-paced, distortion-heavy dancefloor banger - imagine SebastiAn or Justice if they looked up to Pan Sonic as much as they do Daft Punk. The remixes are of tracks from Quehenberger's most recent album, Hazards: the ever wonderful Patrick Pulsinger transforms 'New Beat' into a lean, gothic dancefloor stalker somewhere between amyl-fuelled EBM, 90s acid and svelte minimal, while just below surface an insanely ragged vamp rages away, fully justifying the track's title. Elin makes a long-awaited return to Mego after 16 years, delivering a nicely skanking, bass-led electro-funk version of 'Hey Gert' before US producer Altroy turns up to craft a stripped, compressed techno battering ram out of 'Keep Talking', sanded down and buffed for timeless warehouse impact.
