van kaye + ignit - Anthology 1980-85
**Lavish foil-embossed 5LP boxset limited to just 600 copies including individually numbered certificate of ownership.** Vinyl On Demand deliver another exquisite archival set turning us on to the minimal synth wave music of legendary Dutch duo Van Kaye and Ignit with this fascinating collection spanning murky darkwave to funked machine pop. After singing with the Monomen in the late '70s, art history student Ed Van Kasteren began working with performing artist and student, Ignit Bekken. They formed Van Kaye & Ignit, and soon after the Ding Dong Discs label to represent the cultural expressions of the Randstad undergound (an area between Amsterdam and Rotterdam), offering their own distinguished synth experiments besides independently releasing the likes of Legendary Pink Dots, Bene Gesserit, Anne Gillis, and Bel Canto Orchestra on a series of beautifully designed records and tape compilations. The first LP of this anthology covers Van Kaye's industrial rhythm experiments circa 1980 with the 'Slight Delay Demos', a bunch of acutely raw cuts of synth-pop and wave music which would influence their legendary 1st single proper, 'Picassos On The Wall'. The 2nd LP features full release versions of those exceptionally dark and post-apocalyptic early experiments, but for us, the disc bearing their 1984 cassette 'With A Little Help' features the strongest material. The production values are that bit sharper and there's some incredible moments of unique industrial funk like 'Tense', and 'Stroll' featuring Bill Wisselink and Portion Control, not to mention the brilliantly eccentric interludes. LP 4 spans their compilation output between '82 and '83, touching on energetic Body Music, incredible sci-fi synth atmospheres, spiky electro-funk and punky electronic expressions. LP 5, meanwhile, covers a diverse spectrum of strangely jaunty synth-pop collaborations and unreleased recordings from 1985, plus an energetic live show from 1983. This set should be considered a crucial purchase for anyone searching for the more blurred and grey areas of early '80s synth-wave, where the sound isn't quite goth, simply minimal or just industrial. These are more individual machine pop articulations which don't fall so easily into one category or another. Highly recommended!
