simon scott - Depart, Repeat
This is the first in a new series of beautifully packaged, hand-assembled gatefold 7" releases from boutique imprint Sonic Pieces. Limited to 300 individually numbered copies, each release in the Seven Pieces series looks set to join those gorgeous first editions the label has become well loved for - except that these are the very first vinyl editions on the label. Piece one comes from ex-Slowdive member and noted producer in his own right Simon Scott, delivering two heartfelt tracks recorded at Nils Frahm's Durton studio in Berlin. As the liner notes explain, Scott had a bit of a health scare a couple of years back, the impact of which led to the recording of two pieces which are quite unlike the ethereal electronic productions he has been releasing on his own Kesh label, as well as the Miasmah imprint in recent years. Here you'll find Scott in singer-songwriter mode, delivering two acoustically strummed pieces sung and played by him on guitar and Xylophone, augmented by Nils Frahm on piano, synths "watch alarm" and glockenspiel. Thankfully the scare proved to be a false alarm, but the tracks leave behind them the vapour trail of sadness and hope Scott experienced at the time, imbuing this beautiful record with an added sense of poignancy. 300 copies only - don't miss.
