seefeel - Seefeel
When Warp announced a new Seefeel album to be on the horizon last year there was a palpable gasp of joy from oldtime shoegazers across the world, followed by cries of "wtf?!" when they heard that Shigeru Ishihara aka DJ Scotch Egg had joined Mark Clifford and Sarah Peacock to augment the original lineup. It's now 15 years since the release of '(Ch-Vox)' and Seefeel have moved with the times, adjusting their trademark sound with characteristically fractal noise textures from Shigeru and more organic, pounding drums from Boredoms' E-da. There's still a sunkissed bliss running throughout the album, but it's of a more sullied, toxic variety. They don't give it up as easily as the halcyon, post-rave electronica days of the mid-90s, shielding Sarah's etherial vocals and droning bass with Shigeru's digital defense mechanisms on 'Dead Guitars', or slicing ruts in the surface of 'Making' to imbue proceedings with a more uncomfortable sense of beauty. This kind of juxtaposition is evident through nearly all the tracks, lending the album a strange yet compelling stoic identity. Either way, repeat listens bring fresh nuances and quirks to the table which means we'll be engaging with this one for a little while yet. Recommended.
