aethenor - En Form For Bla
Æthenor darken our doorstep with a fourth album of amazing doom expressions. The line up includes improv percussion master Steve Noble (Rip Rig & Panic), Sunn 0))) guitarist Stephen O'Malley, Kristoffer Rygg (Ulver) and Daniel O'Sullivan (Ulver, Guapo) "automatically" composing a morphing fusion of avant-metal, doom-jazz and nordic ambience with a stunning feel for gaseous expansions and contractions of abstract sound. Recorded at three gigs in Oslo in 2010, 'En Form For Blå' captures the essence of something incredibly rare and mysterious, always keeping back more than they reveal, but those elusive revelations, once grasped have a tendency to dissipate like the most fleeting thoughts. Noble's drums are a constant, keeping some semblance of timing in the ether, but the other elements are wickedly indistinguishable, feeding in a full spectrum of textures from digital and analogue electronics to pure amp distortion and the lurking subsonic rumble of O'Malley's bass but nothing ever stays fixed for long, sounds are always in transition, arriving at sublime crux points before dissolving into dislocated energies and coagulating at some other arresting extreme. Comparisons are relatively pointless with this group, because they never fit for long. Features sleeve art from Stephen O'Malley. Highly recommended!!!
