vondelpark - Sauna EP
New R&S signings make an impressive entrance with the hazily evocative sound of the 'Sauna EP'. Vondelpark operate at the junction of shoegaze and emo-garage, influenced by the "melting pot" of London's underground music scene to remind of everyone from The xx to The Cure. The formula is beautifully balanced in the ghostly poise of 'Hippodrome' with spectral dub FX wrapped around skinny 2-step beats and mournful, jangly guitars, while 'Jetlag Blue Version' sounds like Blank Dogs gone to a garage rave after their cat died. 'Backflip (In The Sauna)' is most evocative of The xx's soulful charm, and the Hooky-bassline of 'California Analog Dream' gives their sound a very clear context. Fans of James Blake, Mount Kimbie, or The xx should check this as soon as possible.
