martyn - Broken / Shadowcasting
Finally back in stock!!! Generic cross-fertilisation splintered out of the most vibrant urban scene of the last few years is continuing to gather pace, with the much discussed Techno/Dubstep fusion looming large at one end of the spectrum, and the long-awaited evolution of Drum & Bass causing much excitement at the other. The Revolver label has set itself the daunting task of shifting Drum & Bass away from its comfort zone and into pastures new, something that's realised with some considerable success on this new twelve from Martyn. "Broken" is basically a jungle track stripped off its breaks and, instead, replaced with one towering bassline and some introspective, almost ballearic synths - all very evocative and, above all things, restrained. "Shadowcasting" on the flip is more complex and harder to digest in one sitting, a progressive line in arrangements and vocal edits that only really start to make sense when the bassline kicks in proper about half way in. Good to see heads young and old starting to push things into uncharted waters - it's what each and every musical microcosm and scene needs in order to survive. Solid.
