phonophani - Kreken (Numbered Vinyl+CD Special Edition)
*Strictly limited special edition - limited to an individually numbered run of just 250 copies for the world in a customised package including a 10" pressing featuring 25 minutes of exclusive material, plus the full CD album.* New from the Rune Grammofon camp comes album number four from electronica maverick Espen Sommer Eide - known for his work in Alog as much as for his solo output as Phonophani. On Kreken, Eide applies his talents as a programmer and sound engineer to the traditions and instruments of Norwegian folk music, dissecting the timbres and tuning systems with a little help from contributing artists David Grubbs, Haco, Jenny Hval, Sigbjorn Apeland and Agnethe Christensen. In addition to his skills as a producer and electronic artist, Eide ably applies his talents across a wide variety of instruments on Kreken, resulting in tangled, jazzy constructions such as the excellent 'Vuku' or more tangibly folky electroacoustic workouts (particularly 'Kvaale Ii' and the beautiful title track). The addition of vocals helps the record fconnect with folk song idioms, even if they do manifest themselves in the most esoteric of ways: 'Mendel' is a haunting, quite incredible piece of abstract music, and 'Neverdal' has the feel of a duet between Anne Briggs and an Oval record. Excellent stuff.
