sparkling wide pressure - Fields and String
Already sold-out at source, Field & String marks the first major release from Frank Baugh's Sparkling Wide Pressure, following on from cassette and CD-R releases via labels such as Students Of Decay, Housecraft and Baugh's own Kimberly Dawn Recordings. This four-piece album continually evades any neat classification; although it's steeped in the language of psyched-out soundscapes this isn't quite a drone record, nor is it an avant-folk affair, yet these elements and several more certainly feed into its unique character. Perhaps Finnish experimentalist Es (aka Fonal boss Sami Sanpakkila) would be a decent point of reference, but then perhaps not... 'Clear Pathway' meanders through needle-sharp guitars, washed-out synth tones and all manner of lo-fi tape effects, while bizarre primitive drum machine hits strike up a shambling percussive backbone. Moving on to the excellent 'Jeremy Moves' a constellation of shimmering keyboard tones strike up with various bits of tonal detritus floating around grainily in the background and gradually a more coherent vision starts to emerge, floating between cosmic ambience and decomposing rustic sounds. Flipping over, 'Summoning' introduces itself with some monumentally battered acoustic guitar strings flapping about, while groaning voices, stray flutes and run-down room noises all converge to carve a surreal stream of curious low-fidelity clamour. Steady machine pulses and semi-dissolved synth sweeps return for closing piece 'Completely Inside', throwing together various different melodic threads that don't strictly slot together: acid guitar leads and loop-sculpted background noise collide awkwardly, using clashing tonal colours to paint a very strange, but wholly compelling picture. Pressed up in a run of just 150 copies, the LP is finely dressed in opulent fold-out, silkscreened covers by Jeremy Braden. Given that Digitalis are already all out of these you'd be advised to act fast to make sure you ensnare one of these...
