topaz rags - Chown Center
Topaz Rags is a trio featuring Pocahaunted star Amanda Brown and Robedoor's Britt Brown, and having already released an album and EP for Not Not Fun, they return with redoubled psychedelic gravitas for this 7" offering. 'Crown Center' moves like a brontosaurus wading through maple syrup (Canadian grade 3), thanks to a bassline that quivers under its own lurching heft. Twanging through the slurry, surf-compatible guitar leads dart around within Eastern modes while a vocal line drones listlessly through the mix. B-side 'You Go On' takes on the booming wah-wah minimalist tone of a Sun Araw outing, cranking another bass-heavy production that drips with foggy, lo-fi indiscipline. Amped up electric piano and rambling vocals play a freeform counterpart to that relentlessly repeating bass passage, all of which adds up to some of the heaviest, weirdest psych-rock around.
