ducktails - Mirror Image
Total bliss-out gem from Matthew Mondanile aka Ducktails, offering two nostalgia-warped avant-pop picks on Shdwply. Compared with the last few, 2010 has been a quiet year for Ducktails, this being his first solo release of the year and all, but dude's obviously just been chilling, going on a road trip or hanging out at the beach or something. On the A-side, 'Apple Walk' sounds like he just got home after a long hot day and laid his vibe straight onto 4-track, making for 3 minutes of distorted jangle and flanged vocals with a sublime intention. With 'Mirror Image Index' on the flip he enters a slightly stranger zone, a few hours down the line and the air is still warm and the effect is a little druggier, imbuing his looped drums, woozy organ and spiraling synth with a lilting, almost African sense of psyched repetition. Magical.
