brad laner - Natural Selections
**Now available on coloured vinyl with digital download code included - redeemable from the label** Brad Laner has been behind countless recording guises, most significantly shoegaze pioneers Medicine, plus electronica acts Lexaunculpt, Electric Company and Planet Mu's Internal Tulips - he even played with post-punk/industrial heroes Savage Republic. Now resuming activities under his own name, Laner delivers a pop-inspired solo album. Co-produced by Thom Monahan (of Vetiver and Brightblack Morning Light fame) the album takes the form of an accomplished psych-tinted affair that piles up layer upon layer of vocals and earthy instrumentation. Songs like 'Eyes Close', 'Magnolia Doubles' and 'Why Did I Do It' take the spirit of folk-pop from the West Coast during the 1970s and inject an undercurrent of experimentation, lining the pristine harmonies and fingerpicked guitars with electronic contingents that sound tellingly 21st century. Laner is a genuine musical polymath, and this latest shift in direction certainly isn't the handiwork of a mere dabbler. It's hard to imagine any single artist could be equally impressive as an experimental songwriter as he was as an innovator of glitch music (particularly under his Lexaunculpt guise), but Natural Selections proves that to be the case.
