oneohtrix point never / antony / fennesz - Returnal
Majestically emotive revisions of 'Returnal', courtesy of OPN, Antony and Fennesz! On the dramatic A-side Lopatin and Hegarty recontextualise the track from its synthesized environment into a plaintive composition for piano and vocals, Daniel "OPN" Lopatin providing keys and Antony offering an intimate performance unadorned with the harmonized delays of the original. Their restraint in approach and execution is just beautiful, aesthetically flipping the track as far as possible while retaining its bracing melancholy effect. Meanwhile, Fennesz consolidates the opposing methods with an ethereal blend of organic and electronic, remixing the Antony and OPN version with adroit attention to detail, gilding the keys with digital immersion and causing them to slowly bloom in contoured night shades while Antony's vocal haunts itself in a palatial dub chamber. Presented in a limited run with superb artwork from Stephen O'Malley. An absolute treasure.
