pale sketcher - Jesu: Pale Sketches Demixed
Pale Sketcher gathers together a selection of remixed tracks based on material from Jesu's 2007 album, Pale Sketches - a body of work whose heavy orientation towards electronics didn't quite subscribe to Justin K. Broadrick's more usual modus operandi. It quickly becomes clear that this is a direction that works for the Godflesh founder, orbiting around the borderline epic qualities his Jesu project tends to court without the underlying metal connotations that tend to be a part of that package. So while the noise-swathed guitars are absent, Broadrick still works within the same mindset of post-shoegaze textures and scrunched beats that have occupied the background of his recordings for so long. There are unabashed nods towards pop early on, with 'Can I Go Now (Gone Version)' sounding like a weird ghost image of an Autotuned radio hit. However approachable Pale Sketcher gets, this music doesn't scrimp on the hefty low end and thumping authority of the beats, with melodic instrumental 'Wash It All Away (Cleansed Dub)' and 'Plans That Fade (Faded Dub)' being especially notable culprits on this front. Other highlights include the ultra slow motion electro-pop of 'The Playgrounds Are Empty (Slumber Mix), the panoramic synth-play of 'Dummy (Bahnhof Version)' and the heavily edited breaks of 'Tiny Universe (Interstellar)'. This project might only be an aside from the main agenda of his Jesu project, but Broadrick would do well to pursue this vein of material further. Recommended.
