s. carey - All We Grow
Previously to be found playing in Bon Iver's band, Sean Carey steps out on his own for Jagjaguwar, constructing a hugely impressive solo outing that calls on all his experience both as a modern folk performer and as a formally trained musician - Carey has a degree in classical percussion. These classical elements run particularly strongly through the stabbing, repetitious arrangement of 'We Fell', bearing the minimalist influence of Steve Reich, while interlude 'Rothko Fields' obscures the borders between classical music and Eno-inspired ambience with its warm, elongated woodwinds. For all this, songs remain at the heart of the album, with the likes of 'In The Stream' showcasing Carey's considerable writing talent and a knack for vocal harmonising that seems to have been carried over from his Bon Iver dayjob. Violins, double-bass and Carey's searching drum arrangements all help complete the package, while another standout, 'In The Dirt' comes close to unifying Carey's folk and classical concerns, laying another nicely built-up vocal melody atop arpeggiating piano runs and wonderful syncopated percussive configurations.
