the count & sinden - Mega Mega Mega
A genre-exploding new album from Essex-residing production titans The Count & Sinden, loaded up with a variety of collaborators, including Mystery Jets, Bashy, Katy B, 77Klash, Trackademicks, Rye Rye and the disastrously/sublimely monikered Coolio Iglesias. If you've ever thought of these two as a bit too jokey or willfully preposterous for their own good, a quick listen to that Mystery Jets collaboration, 'After Dark' proves they're more than capable of spinning dancefloor-pop gold when they feel like it. The indie rockers are given a retouching of '70s Nigerian funk and sound all the better for it. This isn't the only big, anthemic vocal track - not by a long way - and the Bashy-fronted 'Addicted To You' has a killer, indefatigable chorus that could just run and run, while Katy B is a great vocal presence on the warbling bassline derangement of 'Hold Me'. The instrumental cuts prove the producers can flourish just as adeptly without a song structure to work around, leaving you with the Middle Eastern string twanging of 'Desert Rhythm', the grimy 4'4 of 'Elephant 1234' and 'Panther', which sounds a bit like an extra garish, slightly more South American sounding take on Perfecto Allstars' 'Reach Up'. True to The Count & Sinden's prior form, there's no real subscription or adherence to anyone production template, and you'll find these tracks rattling through Afrobeat, Baltimore-influenced house, dancehall and tropical styles with a dozen more to spare. Tons of fun to be had here.
