pvt - Church With No Magic
You might remember the vowel-shunning Australian band PVT under their previous moniker, Pivot. While the name change was undertaken for legal reasons, it also seems to have served as a handy marker for a musical turning point within the band's recording career. Having made a gradual shift from textural and ambient-inspired music towards more tangible and complex sounds, PVT now arrive at something approaching song-shaped electro-rock with this fine third album. Church With No Magic embraces vocals and nestles them symbiotically within their tangled mass of synthesizers, mathsy live-kit rhythms and heavily orchestrated computer programming; something put to stellar use throughout the record, but seldom better than on the TV On The Radio-like 'Crimson Swan', which finds the band at their most dramatic and spine-tinglingly epic. Comparisons to labelmates Battles seem to be widespread whenever this band get written about, yet this new album marks a shift towards something that's new, progressive and viscerally accessible.
