loren connors - Hell's Kitchen Park
Originally released in 1993, this classic Loren Connors LP gets some well-deserved reissue treatment from new label Enabling Works. Pressed onto 180g vinyl and packaged in a great sleeve with a vintage Hell's Kitchen photographic insert, the scene is set for a collection of exquisitely intimate and maudlin instrumentals, with a further two vocal cuts featuring Suzanne Langille (the sublime 'Child' and 'Brigid's Song'). The wonderful 'Mother & Son' announces the album in a fashion that would prove to be a signature stylistic trait of Connors' electric period: the guitarist lays down a guiding chord sequence only to overdub his soloing on top afterwards. This rhythm/lead duet approach creates the familiarly muffled and bleary-eyed style that Connors continued to pursue throughout the 1990s and is put to excellent use right across the album, hitting peaks like 'Sorrow In The House' - on which Connors sounds a little like late '60s Eric Clapton being contacted through a seance. It could be argued that you'll find some of the avant-bluesman's finest work assembled here - the tone of the recordings suits Connors' unassuming brand of melancholy perfectly, and his soloing has seldom sounded more sensitive or streamlined. Even the occasional use of (once horribly dated sounding) chorus effects seem bang on the money here thanks to recent retro production trends. A beautiful LP edition that's not to be missed by fans of Connors' music.
