coliseum - House With A Curse
Coliseum are a power trio hailing from Louisville, Kentucky who've previously been seen on the roster of iconic metal label Relapse Records, but now port over to the more underground Temporary Residence imprint with a line-up change (Carter Wilson replaces Chris Maggio on drums). Prompting references to everyone from Fugazi to Queens Of The Stone Age, this album sees a broadening of Coliseum's sound, developing beyond the breakneck heaviness of former works and embracing a more diverse - even melodic - approach. House Without A Curse immediately flips expectations by revealing an introductory track that sculpts a minor-key lament from cello, violin, accordion and organ, but we're soon thrown into the band's mercilessly efficient maelstrom of heaviness on the anthemic 'Blind In One Eye'. Only underlining Coliseum's status in the underground, guesting on the album are indie heroes like Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Rachel's and Shipping News member Jason Noble, J. Robbins of Jawbox and Peter Searcy of Squirrel Bait.
