souvenir's young america - The Name of the Snake
The Name Of The Snake is a highly sophisticated instrumental post-metal album by Virginian band Souvenir's Young America, their follow-up to 2007's doomy opus An Ocean Without Water. Beginning with the hard, heavy and intelligently pieced together 'Water (Forgetting The Past)', the band find themselves moving in the same kind of circles as the likes of Earth and Pelican, yet somehow, Souvenir's Young America even manage to make the harmonica function as an apt agent of sludgy, dark Americana. Guitars intertwine with an evocatively gloom-laden elegance, switching between heavy riffs, bluesy, fuzz-drenched contortions and even a stretch of steel-strung, acoustic suspense during 'Dust (Erasing The Future)'. Impressive, highly accomplished material all-round, offering a superior example of modern post-rock.
