trans am - Thing
Originally commissioned as a sci-fi / horror adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, Trans Am's Thing soon became it's own entity when funding for the project fell apart. Undeterred, the band continued with their work, crafting this tremendously progged-out nerd-rock opus. Of course you can't make a sci-fi inspired instrumental album called Thing without some lazy so-and-so making a John Carpenter reference, but sure enough, the towering analogue spillages of 'Bad Vibes' are very Assault On Precinct 13, although a more legitimate genre comparison could probably be made to the schlock-and-awe synth nonsense associated with Norman J. Warren's 1981 classic, Inseminoid. The album actually shifts gears rather a lot though, rattling through a variety of different personas: 'Interstellar Drift' latches onto classic kosmische vibes while 'The Silent Star' sounds like Add N To (X) reinterpreting Rush's 'Tom Sawyer'. Weirder still, the jagged guitars of 'Arcadia' have a brush with Italo disco, and even more improbably, 'Naked Singularity' is (bear with me) like a premonition of a Justice 12" channelled by Soft Machine during a collective bad mushroom trip in Canterbury circa 1969. Whatever, Thing is a great piece of work from this seasoned trio.
