Uniting the twin titans of Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid once again, 'Tongues' is the follow-up of sorts to their recent excursions into the exchange sessions. Whilst these previous outings were sprawling and experimental in scope, 'Tongues' sees the duo playing with a newfound sense of focus which even extends to a heightened melodic sensibility (check out the sweetened harp arpeggios of 'Our Time'). By no means clipping their sonic wings for the more focused look of 'Tongues', the entire album was recorded live at The Exchange with no overdubs or edits - providing a free spirit within the compositions that is difficult to pinpoint. Sounding closer in feel to Hebden's solo work as Four Tet (albeit with the addition of some impressively dexterous percussion), Tongues is every bit the logical step up from the duo's previous collaborations - with the time signature-defying 'People Be Happy' and the almost gamelan-like percussion minimalism of 'Mirrors' two obvious highlights. Able to collapse in utter chaos one moment and tighten it all back up the next, 'Tongues' sees two peerless musicians at the very height of their game - allowing the listener to get stuck in the middle for an exhilarating and utterly captivating record. Tongue sandwich!
