tindersticks - Black Smoke / Just Drifting
Lifted from their on-form Falling Down A Mountain LP for 4AD, 'Black Smoke' finds the Tindersticks slipping themselves into a rockin' groove, complete with vintage-styled production and heavy tambourine usage. If superficially the song's stomping, big-band arrangement seems uncomfortably feel-good, you need only take some time to digest the lyrics. With lines like: "I went down to the river/But the river's drowned/I went down to the river/But the river's choked in black smoke" Stuart Staples continues to weave his miserablist magic. This limited edition Lucky Dog 7" is backed with a rousingly beautiful cover of Psychic TV's debut single 'Just Drifting'.
