benoit pioulard - Fir
*Last copies - comes in a plain white paper sleeve* Quality assured with the Type watermark, the latest 7" in their beatific series comes from Chicago-based Tom Meluch (aka Benoit Pioulard), whose recent LP 'Precis' helped redefine the boundaries of what could be expected from those who set about recording music in their bedroom. To cut a long story short, it was gorgeous. Returning here with a selection of songs that somehow achieve an even more piquant level of melancholic bliss - Meluch opens the bidding through the eroded pop song 'Fir' that rasps into life with wheezing guitars and shuddering percussion, before Meluch's vocals hit you in the heart through pin-prick emotional intensity. The kind of music which makes you realise just what a fantastic format 7"s are, 'Fir' is pop as seen through a summer fog - cloaked in light but masked from the ear, pulling you ever further in to discover its melodic charms. Turn your vinyl and you'll be confronted by Meluch's paean to love - wherein the emotion's capability to turn the most articulate individual into a gibbering fool is captured to perfection as 'Forming at the Mouth' crumbles like a limestone edifice into a sea of pure emotion, sticking in the heart and mind long after the run-out groove is breached. Proper lovely.
