FILASTINE
filastine - Burn It
Having lobbed his debut album out a few weeks back on DJ Rupture's Soot label, Filastine has culled the LP for a selection-box of cuts - with this 12" a highlights package for those who favour the stylus. World music in the broadest possible sense, 'Burn It' sees the chap Filastine bringing in a slice of Brazilian Funk here, a smattering of Indian vocals there and glazing it all off with sprinkling of French hip-hop or Jamaican bounce. Nowhere near as astringent as such enterprises can often become, Filastine seems to have no problem in bringing the disparate elements neatly together under the same roof - with opening track 'The Last Redoubt' a case in point. Towering from the speakers on a sure-footed set of hip-hop beats, 'The Last Redoubt' seems perpetually on the brink of collapse as rubber-bass, peppery vocal and shotgun rhythms all coalesce around the unrelenting tempo. Like spinning plates, Filastine seems well aware of his precarious exterior and draws on it throughout - with the likes of 'Ja Helo', 'Crescent Occupation' and 'Spliner Faction Delight' all cramming more ideas and sounds per minute than many manage in a lifetime... Burn baby burn!
