earth / sir richard bishop - The Peacock Angels Lament / Narasimha
*JUST A HANDFUL OF COPIES AVAILABLE - HURRY* This split LP was originally made available as a tour-only release, offering one side performed by Earth's Dylan Carlson and one by acoustic guitar virtuoso Sir Richard Bishop, both opting for very different yet highly complimentary approaches to sinister drone-weaving instrumentals. Carson's 'The Peacock Angels Lament' is a disconcertingly melodic and warm exercise in layered guitar, with the usual low-end tones foiled by strikingly tuneful and florid (by Earth standards at least) lead figures. It's a real gem of a piece, and its simple elegance neatly clashes with the wholly more feverous clamour of Bishop's flipside counterpart 'Narasimha', a far-out journey into Eastern harmonics and instrumentation, multitracking acoustic guitars, lapsteel, electric sitar, harmonium and electric tamboura, all of which is given the feel of a demonic raga by Randall Dunn's provision of "low drone". Awesome.
