kowton - Stasis (G Mix) / Countryman
After some time gestating in mixes on radio and circulating among allies, the artist also known as Narcossist delivers his 'Countryman' and 'Stasis' cuts on Martin "Blackdown" Clarke's Keysound Recordings. His records on Mindset and Clandestine Cultivations caused a stir in the dubstep community for their blend of classic UK garage with dub techno and darkly melcancholic atmospheres, but for his Keysound debut he goes that little bit deeper with slower tempos and a well defined house flex. 'Stasis (G Mix)' retains links to the scene with garage rhythms rolling at a 124bpm pace, weaving in chasmic dub chords lifted straight out of Berlin and ghostly crackling textures reminscent of Burial. On the flip 'Countryman' finally sees the light of day after opening Blackdown's mixes and featuring highly on the wishlists of steppers everywhere. Here, he takes cues from Dettmann and the Horizontal Ground imprint but nudges the kicks just off the grid for a heavy rollers effect that connects the dots between techno, garage and dubstep.
