sleepless crew / the wee dj's - We Could Be Zeros (Or Ones)
The Subplate mission continues with another tronic-grime-dancehall-acid-raw-sh*t twelve from the Sleepless Crew. The title track "We Could Be Zero's" has an unusual blend of erratic Chi town funk and swooping electro-tech squelch, complete with some Detroit soul in the strings and synth departments - but the drive is sheer Sleepless groove. "Sex Cells" features vintage future music complete with muted rave stabs, master programming and an acid break that can't but fail to move your tail bone. Contracted in on B1 are specialist bass destructors The Wee djs of SCSI / Touchin' Bass fame, here building on a hard-bitten molten bass-form, bringing the pressure with tight, riotous percussive licks and cut n paste melodies with hidden surprises. Rounding up in trademark Subplate humour we're grinding in a dancehall where Kingston meets The Hague via a Slough rave, all in a Southside tenement block.
