outputmessage - Nebulae
Now available on vinyl. Known to the taxman as Bernard Emmanuel Farley Jr., Outputmessage is a stalwart of Ghostly International and has now made a hop, skip and jump over Melodic for his 'Nebulae' LP under the name Outputmessage. Hovering neatly over the hinterland where minimal ceases to be minimal and cluttered electronics thin out into something more manageable, 'Nebulae' seems likely to attract those who like thin digitalis and more mealy electronica alike - a fact instantly recognisable on 'Glintz'. Bursting out of the chest with a barrage of beats that errs on the epic, 'Glintz' swoops here and there with blustering disregard, before 'Approaching Skyline' sidles into view with a butter-churn of bass and industrial samples that hits you low then revives the senses with a bottle of starburst synths. Elsewhere 'Metal' is a never-ending system of looping beats and glazed interference, 'Bernard's Song' gets a sweat on with an R&B/techno collision, whilst album highlight 'Snow' brings the lights down through a skittering odyssey that sounds like The Postal Service on whiz. Which is a good thing...
