nudge - As Good As Gone
As Good As Gone is the second Nudge long-player for Kranky, following on from 2005's Cached, and as was the case back then main man Brian Foote (of Fontanelle) is assisted by Strategy's Paul Dickow and Honey Owens, who these days is probably best known for her recordings as Valet. Foote has been keeping himself busy as a producer, recording bands from the Deerhunter family, Atlas Sound and Lotus Plaza between albums, but happily this new work finds him running the show again. Nudge's obscuring of the boundaries between live instrumentation and programmed elements makes for a sound that's hard to pigeonhole - whether that be during the Owens-fronted drone-pop of 'Harmo' or something like 'Aurolac', whose loosened layers of guitar, electronics and brushed kit sounds betray the influence of dub, post-rock and nineties shoegazing indie. At various points this music is likely to invite comparisons to the Pan American catalogue: there's the similarly shuffling, somnambulant feel to the time-keeping of the record, and on 'Burns Blue' Foote does a particularly good job of channelling that spirit of hushed, restless song-scaping thanks to its dazzling reverberations, dissolved drum patter and semi-absent vocals. Recommended.
