mount kimbie - Sketch On Glass EP
Mount Kimbie's debut EP was a dazzling entry for their self created brand of post-dubstep electronics, picking up props across the board from DJ Koze to Mary Anne Hobbs. The follow-up EP is just as crafty, merging influences and styles as diverse as electro acoustics with Dilla style slump funk and clipped 2-step with an emotionally fragile character. 'Sketch On Glass' is the glistening opener, squirming with detailed micro-rhythmic mechanics and reflecting chrome coloured melodies from it's buffed surface, while 'Serged' takes a different tack entirely with a tidal shift of downbeat electronic soul, sounding like Fennesz meeting Blue Daisy at a windy beach. 'Fifty Mile View' surveys more stylistic juxtapositions with an Autechre meets Harmonic 313 vibe where complex electronics are leavened by trained jazz chords and a plaintive vocoder, leaving the sumptuous 'At Least' to finish on a tweaked future funk tip for Flying Lotus groupies. For anyone investigating the fringes of the dubstep scene this is among the most intriguing and best informed gear you'll find. Recommended.
