khonnor - Burning Palace
Teenage. Wonderkid. Prodigy. Vermont. Astonishing. Getting the obligatory lexical quintet out of the way to start with, it is nonetheless worth dwelling on why every review concerning Khonnor tends to begin this way; because for someone so young he's got a lifetime of songwriting acumen and unadulterated talent coursing through his veins. The first in a fetchingly wrapped series of 7"s on the always gorgeous Type, 'Burning Palace' is Khonnor's much-anticipated return after the hyperbole-magnet that was 'Handwriting'. Proving that talent is unable to stand still, Khonnor ditches the more overt singer/songwriter/distortion elements of his debut LP in favour of an utterly expansive and startlingly raw electronic masterpiece that combines piquant vocals, analogue waterfalls and chiming digital missives to dizzying effect. Using a box-of-tricks that harks back to electronica's late-Nineties boom, Khonnor has somehow stripped out the extraneous fluff and left an emotional core that can't help move you.
